The 3rd Annual Globey Awards and Globaloria Open House celebrating excellence in game design happens Thursday, May 17, 2012 at East Austin College Prep. This school year, 300 6th, 7th & 8th graders studied daily how to create web games that teach math, science, or civics concepts and social issues. Using Globaloria—the first social learning network for game design—they leaned to research, design, program, and present their ideas. They also leaned to work in teams and collaborate with teachers and experts on solving engineering problems and making great educational games.

The public is encouraged to attend the Globey Award competitions for 2011-2012 to celebrate these students and their accomplishments. Grand prize is a game designer kit (Laptop with Flash Software) and finalists will earn drawing tablets for each member.

Winners will be chosen based on:

1. How well the game works (Technical quality)
2. How well the game-making process is presented (Production quality)
3. How well the game represents civics knowledge and facts (Research quality)
4. How well the game teaches civics and news literacy content (Content quality)
5. How well the game is designed (Artwork and animation quality)
6. How well the team collaborates (Teamwork quality)

The Globaloria Mentors at East Austin College Prep are planning a trip to San Jose, California for the first week of June 2012 to meet the students of Christopher Elementary whom they have been helping this year. Two schools in San Jose began the implementation of Globaloria in their daily school curriculum this year, and EAPrep teacher Nyssa Arcos-Evans is a teacher mentor to the two educators there. Arcos-Evans thought it would be a great opportunity for EAPrep’s third year Globaloria students to mentor the first year Globaloria students in San Jose, so seventeen 8th Grade Globaloria students from EAPrep have been communicating with them through their school wikis, Blogger and email.

The Globaloria Mentors at East Austin College Prep will be visiting the students of Christopher Elementary School on June 5th. The kids will have the opportunity to meet in person and present their final games to one another and maybe even create a mini-game together. They will also be able to attend the Silicon Valley Globey Awards that evening. In addition to meeting with their Globaloria friends, they will be visiting UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, Stanford University, the GooglePlex, AMD Headquarters in Sunnyvale, Intel Headquarters, and either the Computer History Museum or Cal Academy of Sciences if time allows.

The students and their parents are still heavily fundraising even though the trip is just around the corner. They are diligently raising money by selling after school concessions each week. They also set up food booths at school festivals and sold BBQ in front of Callahan’s general store. The month of May will be a busy month as they desperately try to raise the funds they are still short of for the trip.

To help the kids get to California, go to EAPrep instructor Mrs. Arcos Evan’s Globaloria blog that features links to all the students’ blogs and showcases two games by one of EAPrep’s students, Michael Alvarez, who won a Gold Medal and Game Changer Award at the 2012 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The site also has a donate option at the bottom for your convenience.

Adults and children of all ages enjoyed listening as two of our EA Prep students read from My Dream of Martin Luther King by Faith Ringgold and My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers by Christine King Farris. During the Read-In participants were also taught to create peace flowers emphasizing Dr. King’s message of peace and unity.

Southwest Key’s El Centro de Familia campus was one of three Austin locations that held Read-Ins during the month of February. The goal of the national read-in event is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.

Former Austin Mayor Gustavo “Gus” L. Garcia is to be honored by the US Hispanic Contractors Association (UHCA) at an event at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center on Wed., May 9th, 11:30am-1pm. The occasion will mark the 40th anniversary of Garcia becoming the first Latino elected to the Austin Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees. Garcia went on to become board president three years later and served during the turmoil of integration. After 30 years in public service, he retired from politics in 2000. Gus also served as Southwest Key Board Chair for many years.
From the Save the Date press release:

In April of 1972, led by a small group mobilized by J. Pete Reyes, Bella Caballero, Gabriel Gutiérrez, Bruce Hupp and other community activists, the community developed a list of 17 Demands for quality education for Latinos in Austin. This grassroots movement led to the successful election of Gus to the AISD Board. The list of 17 Demands ultimately became the agenda for Gus during the six years that followed. Please join us for the important recognition!

Garcia’s tireless work towards quality education for East Austin Latino students is central to our work and we encourage one and all to attend this event.

We’ve loaded some EAPrep student artwork to our Flickr account. EAPrep art teacher Baldomero Valdez says this work, which was created by his 7th and 8th grade students using tempera paints on recycled paper, primarily focuses on the color wheel.

“There are 12 colors in the color wheel,” says Valdez who’s currently working on an online gallery to display his students’ work. “Students had to mix primary colors (red, yellow, blue) to create secondary and tertiary colors which are made by mixing a primary color with secondary color. “

Valdez adds that this upload also contains several images of landscape paintings where students had to use a monochromatic color scheme. “Here students used a primary color and mixed it with black and white to create different tints and hues of that color.”

The result is striking. We would hang any number of these works in our home!
